Ukraine Manufactures Its First Wind Turbine Blade

Ukraine’s industrial sector has achieved a breakthrough in renewable energy. At the production facility of Friendly Wind Technology LLC, the first wind turbine blade manufactured in Ukraine has rolled off the assembly line — measuring 75 meters in length and weighing 25 tons.

This is more than an engineering milestone. It marks the beginning of a fully localized national supply chain for wind energy equipment.

From Import Dependence to Domestic Production

Until recently, Ukraine was fully dependent on imported components for wind power plants. Blades — among the most expensive and technologically complex elements of a turbine — were delivered from abroad.

That is now changing. According to Viktor Mykyta, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, the launch of blade production signifies the completion of a full domestic manufacturing cycle for wind turbines in Ukraine.

Step by step, the country is gaining the ability to independently meet its own demand for wind energy equipment.

Built to International Standards

The production process uses molds supplied by Gurit, one of the world’s leading companies in composite materials for the wind industry.

This enables the manufacturing of blades that meet international standards for strength, aerodynamics, and durability. In practical terms, Ukrainian wind turbines are now equipped with “wings” built according to global technological requirements.

Strategic Importance for Energy Security

The development of wind energy is currently one of the most important directions in rebuilding Ukraine’s energy system. In the context of war and repeated attacks on infrastructure, distributed generation has become a matter of national energy security.

Wind power plants:

• reduce dependence on fossil fuels;

• enhance grid resilience;

• allow for faster restoration of capacity after damage;

• and now, create domestic added value, jobs, and engineering expertise.

Looking Ahead

The launch of blade production is only the beginning. The next step is integration into international supply chains and the export of Ukrainian-made wind energy components.

Ukraine is gradually transitioning from a technology importer to a manufacturer of complex energy equipment — strengthening both its industrial base and its role in the global renewable energy market.
